“The best dressed group in hip-hop.” DJ Big Ike
The Awesome Crew was designed to be the most versatile group in hip-hop. Seamlessly blending hip-hop, R&B, and rap, The Awesome Crew originated in 1986, in Clinton, South Carolina during the golden era of hip-hop. It was here that the group’s members, Smooth D and Busy B (Nasty Nard) along with Daddy D and Classy D, also known as the Twins of Spin, made their mark as radio and club DJs before venturing into production, arrangement, and song composition. The artists’ undeniable talent propelled them forward, attracting attention from industry insiders.
Once dubbed the best dressed group in hip-hop, The Awesome Crew was always next-level and forward thinking in musical style and fashion. One of the group’s early influences was Morris Day and The Time coupled with the pioneers of hip hop, Kool Herc, Africa Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash. The group’s ideology is rooted in black culture and consciousness. Their imagery and fashion are heavily influenced by The Time. While the music is a unique blend of hardcore, socially consciousness hip-hop combined with elements of smooth R&B.
A dynamic group that offers an innovative approach to redefine modern mainstream music, The Awesome Crew, re-emerged on the music scene three years ago, magnetizing audiences with their distinctive blend of hip-hop, R&B, and spoken word rap. The group has been trending upward since the release of the ground-breaking song “Bad Boys” followed by the breakout single “Back In The Days.”
Amidst the challenges from losing members and the pandemic, The Awesome Crew took on a new form, as Classy D (aka Paradigm) stepped up to complete the unfinished music and vision while paying homage to the group's originality and legacy. Classy D refers to his artistic vision as Adult Contemporary Hip-Hop; a fusion of R&B, hip-hop, and spoken word poetry – blending to create a captivating and thought-provoking musical tapestry. Classy D and Busy B are putting the finishing touches on the new legacy album.
